Totality of symptoms in Homoeopathy doesn't mean a haphazard conglomeration of all the symptoms of a patient or a drug. It really means a combination of certain group of symptoms in definite settings with a definite back ground and certain individualizing characteristics set appropriately on the symptom complex, so that it can point to the drug having similar peculiar symptom complex.
For drawing a picture of the whole totality of the symptoms, one need not to pay importance to all the symptoms of the patient or drug, but only to those ones with their characteristic peculiarities, which in their proper setting, help to distinguish the case from all others.
The term totality not only refers to patient but equally to a drug also.
The sole feature of the phrase is that it must represent, the outwardly reflected picture of the internal essence of the disease, that is of the affection of vital force.
We should remember that in chronic cases, the present totality, may fail to represent the whole extent of disease and may not point towards curative remedy. In such cases, beside the present guiding symptoms, many accessory symptoms and circumstances of the past and family history, must be included. I order to spot out the curative remedy the fundamental cause or causes are also required to be considered.
